In Focus: worriedaboutsatan
No creo en las casualidades, aunque sería muy simplista decir que "todo pasa por algo", creo que hay situaciones que confluyen como consecuencia de otras, tenemos que saber ver las señales para que no pasen desapercibidas, con frecuencia tengo éstas y por increíble que pueda parecer, la mayor parte del tiempo son las que me mantienen a flote, un mensaje, un comentario, alguna imagen que me encuentre en la calle, una serie o una película, esas pequeñas cosas que puedan detonar unas más grandes.
Es así que me decidí a escribir un poco sobre uno de los proyectos que más me han influído por más de diez años, que escucho y me acompaña con frecuencia desde entonces.
Recuerdo que conocí a worriedaboutsatan por ahí de septiembre de 2009, gracias a un amigo que ya los conocía, aunque al principio no le entendí por completo si me gustó bastante, cuando, después, los escuché con mayor detenimiento mientras apreciaba la portada de Arrivals -su álbum debut, tenía unos cuantos meses de haber salido- el círculo se cerró y todo cobró mayor sentido.
Tengo la certeza de que cuando la música que sale de un disco es reflejada por su portada es toda una revelación, pues Arrivals es uno de esos discos, una fotografía en blanco y negro, tres siluetas al centro mientras caminan a un fondo difuminado, al día de hoy me sigue pareciendo tan hermosa como poderosa.
Una combinación de sonidos que en ese momento no me parecía probable, más el tono en el que están producidos fue lo que me fascinó, secuencias de techno denso, serio, al mismo tiempo que enérgico y vibrante, trazas de IDM, electrónica emocional, riffs de guitarra propios del post rock, interludios de dark ambient, todo ello amalgamado sin perder un ápice de coherencia, imbuido de emociones, cobijado por una atmósfera nocturna, amenazante, intrigante por momentos, tierna, melancólica y nostálgica en otros, siempre emotiva.
No es de extrañar que con todas esas cualidades se convirtiera en uno de mis álbumes favoritos, y al paso del tiempo, en uno de los más importantes en mi vida, obviamente me convertí en un leal seguidor, siempre al tanto de cada lanzamiento y publicación que hicieran.
En ese entonces worriedaboutsatan estaba formado por dos miembros, Gavin Miller y Thomas Ragsdale, quien a la postre se saldría, aunque eso no detuvo a Gavin de continuar, de hecho se encuentra en una etapa bastante prolífica, con lanzamientos en distintas labels así como presentaciones en vivo.
En 2010 sacaron el EP Heart Monitor, que contiene tres tracks y un remix, aunque en 2020 lo reeditaron y añadieron un par de remixes.
"Heart Monitor", la canción que le da nombre al EP, continua siendo la que más me gusta de worriedaboutsatan, o al menos la que más me llega de manera personal, en la que se amasan todos los elementos que le caracterizan, una base de beats estilo IDM, un riff de guitarra nostálgico, y la voz emotiva, que, efectiva y directamente toca, atraviesa el corazón, todo concluyendo en un hermoso final, hasta la fecha me saca las lágrimas cuando la escucho.
De ahí le siguieron un par de EP's más antes de la salida de su segundo álbum, que vería la luz varios años después, hasta 2015 con Even Temper, he de decir que me sorprendió un poco, desde la portada abstracta, aunque ésta ya da visos de lo que vendrá.
En Even Temper los ritmos se ralentizan, las imágenes corren en cámara lenta, sin embargo, las atmósferas densas, obscuras, siguen ahí, más presentes que nunca, hasta llegar al punto catártico con "Jaki", percusiones que parecen provenir de algún punto escondido bajo el manto de la noche, tribal, ritualística, acentuada por la voz en loop que nos guía durante el trance, al final todo queda en calma y nos dicen que todo está bien, que estamos seguros.
A partir de ahí ya no se detendrían, el 2016 le vió lanzar su tercer LP Blank Tape, ya totalmente instalados en el techno midtempo secuenciado, por supuesto, sin perder el mood que los caracteriza, éste contiene la canción "This Restless Wing" en la que canta Vincent Cavanagh de la banda de rock progresivo Anathema, que encaja a la perfección con la emotividad del track, otro de los puntos altos banda, sin duda alguna.
Continuarían con Revenant, más enfocado en los sonidos sintetizados que había venido evolucionando en los álbumes anteriores, sin perder personalidad ni el sentimiento que les da su vena post-rock.
En junio de 2019 Thomas Ragsdale deja la banda para enfocarse en su trabajo solista, que había desarrollado paralelamente desde algunos años antes.
En ese mismo año, en octubre, aparece el álbum Blind Tiger, de corte atmosférico-ambient, como lo mencioné al principio, Gavin Miller continua en un racha sumamente prolífica.
Posteriormente vendrían lanzamientos en importantes y respetadas disqueras para los sonidos post-rock, ambient, electrónica emotiva y underground, se trata de los álbumes Crystalline (Sound in Silence), Time Lapse (n5MD), Circles I y II (Shimering Moods Records), Europa (Past Inside The Present) y Providence (Box Records), sin mencionar diversos singles, EP's y colaboraciones.
Ya durante los primeros meses de este año, editó el álbum Bloodsport bajo su propia disquera This Is It Forever y su contraparte complementaria con remixes hechos por nombres relevantes dentro del ambient y la electrónica atmosférica como Christina Giannone, The Sight Below, Hotel Neon, Siavash Amini, Pye Corner Audio, entre otros.
Creo, sin temor a equivocarme que worriedaboutsatan es uno de los personajes más importantes en la música electrónica contemporánea, que ha sabido impregnar de sentimiento cada lanzamiento en el que las fronteras de los géneros y estilos se diluyen formando un cuadro coherente, con personalidad y sonido propio, post rock, techno, electrónica, ambient, drone, todo ello enriquece su producción y sin embargo no la delimita.
Sin duda uno de los proyectos independientes que merecen más exposición y reconocimiento.

I don't believe in coincidence, although it would be very simplistic to say that "everything happens for a reason", I believe that there are situations that come together as a consequence of others, and we have to know how to see the signs so that they don't go unnoticed, I often have these, and Incredible as it may seem, most of the time they are the ones that keep me afloat, a message, a comment, an image I find on the street, a series or a movie, those little things that can trigger bigger ones.
This is how I decided to write a little about one of the projects that have influenced me the most for more than ten years, which I listen to and have accompanied me with frequently since then.
I remember that I met worriedaboutsatan around September 2009, thanks to a friend who already knew them, although at first I didn't fully understand them, I liked them enough, when, later, I listened to them more carefully while appreciating the cover of Arrivals - their debut album, had been out for a few months- the circle was closed and everything made more sense.
I am certain that when the music that comes out of an album is reflected by its cover it is a revelation, because Arrivals is one of those albums, a black and white photograph, three silhouettes in the center while they walk in a blurred background, at to this day I still find it as beautiful as it is powerful.
A combination of sounds that at that time did not seem likely to me, plus the tone in which they are produced was what fascinated me, sequences of dense, serious techno, at the same time as energetic and vibrant, traces of IDM, emotional electronica, guitar riffs typical of post rock, interludes of dark ambient, all amalgamated without losing an apex of coherence, imbued with emotions, sheltered by a nocturnal atmosphere, threatening, intriguing at times, tender, melancholic and nostalgic at others, always emotional.
It is not surprising that with all those qualities it became one of my favorite albums, and over time, one of the most important in my life, obviously I became a loyal follower, always aware of each release and publication from them.
At that time worriedaboutsatan was made up of two members, Gavin Miller and Thomas Ragsdale, who would ultimately leave, although that did not stop Gavin from continuing, in fact he is in a quite prolific stage, with releases on different labels as well as presentations live.
In 2010 they released the Heart Monitor EP, which contains three tracks and a remix, although in 2020 they reissued it and added a couple of remixes.
"Heart Monitor", the song that gives the EP its name, continues to be the one I like the most on worriedaboutsatan, or at least the one that touches me the most personally, in which all the elements that characterize it are mixed, a base of IDM-style beats, a nostalgic guitar riff, and the soulful voice, which effectively and directly touches, pierces the heart, all concluding in a beautiful ending, to this day brings me to tears when I listen to it.
From there, a couple of more EP's followed before the release of his second album, which would be released several years later, until 2015 with Even Temper, I have to say that I was a bit surprised, from the abstract cover, although this already gives glimpses of things to come.
In Even Temper the rhythms slow down, the images run in slow motion, however, the dense, dark atmospheres are still there, more present than ever, until reaching the cathartic point with "Jaki", percussions that seem to come from some hidden point under the cloak of night, tribal, ritualistic, accentuated by the voice in loop that guides us during the trance, in the end everything is calm and they tell us that everything is fine, that we are safe.
From then on they would not stop, 2016 saw them release their third LP Blank Tape, already fully installed in sequenced midtempo techno, of course, without losing the mood that characterizes them, it contains the song "This Restless Wing" in the one sung by Vincent Cavanagh from the progressive rock band Anathema, which fits perfectly with the emotionality of the track, another of the high points of the band, without a doubt.
They would continue with Revenant, more focused on the synthesized sounds that had been evolving in the previous albums, without losing personality or the feeling that their post-rock vein gives them.
In June 2019 Thomas Ragsdale leaves the band to focus on his solo work, which he had developed in parallel for some years before.
In that same year, in October, the album Blind Tiger appears, with an atmospheric-ambient cut, as I mentioned at the beginning, Gavin Miller continues on an extremely prolific streak.
Later releases would come on important and respected labels for post-rock, ambient, emotional electronic and underground sounds, these are the albums Crystalline (Sound in Silence), Time Lapse (n5MD), Circles I and II (Shimering Moods Records), Europe (Past Inside The Present) and Providence (Box Records), without mention various singles, EP's and collaborations.

I believe, without fear of being wrong, that worriedaboutsatan is one of the most important characters in contemporary electronic music, which has managed to impregnate each release with feeling in which the borders of genres and styles are diluted, forming a coherent picture, with personality and sound of his own, post rock, techno, electronica, ambient, drone, all of this enriches his production and yet does not limit it.
Without a doubt one of the independent projects that deserve more exposure and recognition.
